Journey Of Rest

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Rest has many definitions:

  1. To rest, recover, relax, refresh, restore
  2. Period of relaxing or ceasing in stressful activity
  3. Solitude, to be quiet
  4. Tranquility
  5. Pause from working

Please join me on this journey on how to find rest in our lives.

Each year, I chose a new word to help me focus on the year ahead. I have a necklace made with my word and sometimes with a verse added with it. I try to wear it everyday to keep me focused on my goals for the year. This year, my word is rest.

I have other words that I have used over the years and sometimes when I wake up in the morning I may choose another word for the day. Some words I have picked in the past have been success, strength, focus, loyalty, and well being. My goal is to stay focused on what I want to accomplish for the year ahead.

As I reflect on my word, rest, I think all of us get caught up in the craziness of the world and we forget to take care of ourselves. We focus too much on the outside world. We try to do too much in the short amount of time that we have in a day. We sometimes feel like we have to be busy throughout the whole day or people will think we are lazy. But, rest can be challenging.

When was the last time you stopped and listened to the quiet? When was the last time that you made yourself a cup of tea or coffee and just sat? Tell me, do you know where you feel tranquility or what you are doing when you feel most refreshed?  Do you ever just sit and think about all that you have already done in the day? More than likely you would feel exhausted just thinking about it! We need to rest, not only our bodies, but our minds. It is important to give yourself permission to rest and I feel like we don’t do that enough as women in this world.

My favorite way to rest is to fix myself a cup of hot tea, sit and listen to an audiobook while sitting in my favorite spot. Also, if there happens to be snow that is even better since to me it brings a freshness to the world. If not listening to an audiobook, I use the Calm app on my phone to help me focus on my breathing and help me clear my mind. It helps me to fall asleep faster and sleep better.

As women, we play major roles in life, we are daughters, sisters, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, friends, secret holders and above all else listeners. As women I believe we take each of these roles very seriously and we try to do our very best at each one.

One of our most important roles is listening and sometimes we only do this half heartedly. We need to give those in our lives our utmost attention so that they know that we are there for them, that we will always be there for them. We don’t always have to have an answer or a solution but listening could be the only thing that this person needs from us. Often when we are quiet they come up with a solution or an answer to their problems on their own. Focusing on listening can be very powerful. To me, this is another version of rest. I rest my voice, open my ears, visually assess what is in front of me, and think before responding.

As I begin this journey, I hope that you will join me. Together maybe we can come up with some ideas to share with others on how to rest and become the best person we know that we can be.
